This week we are going to react to the film "Class Actions" which we saw in class.

Week of January 6, Preparing to see Class Action

Hi everyone,

This week we are going to prepare to watch a film called "Class Action" by Not in our Town.

Please answer the questions below in google docs! This is important because we will be posting your answers to the Not in our Town, Not in our School blogs as well as our own blog.

1. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?
2. Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?
3. What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.
4. Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.
5. How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?
6. Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.
7. Read the quotes below and write a reaction to each one (make a text to text, text to self or text to world connection with each one):

• We have had never done anything where we were standing up to something to that magnitude.
• I probably would have waited for people to have a better chance to get to know me, for me to not have my fist major public events to be ones that were associated with controversy. But, our elected student leadership had said, “It’s time now to make this change. It’s time for this to stop.”
• We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University
• This is a happier and healthier place because of our students who provided great leadership.
• A place so connected with such a history cannot only reconcile with it but change for the better.
• Somebody comes in the dark of night and breaks out your window, you don’t know what they’re capable of doing. You don’t know what their next step is going to be.
• An attack on one is an attack on all and it can become trite, though, if you don’t back that up with action.
• You can’t work with children on a day to day basis like this and see their fear and not be compelled to do something about it.
• We emphasize the impact of peer power versus peer pressure. You have a power and an impact over other students but if you use it positively you can have a tremendous impact on the community.
• Allow your mind to be changed and forever understand your power and the impact you have on the lives around you.

Week of December 23, Tying up loose ends

Hi everyone,

This week we are going to explore the websites of Not in our Town and Not in our School.

Before we do that, we need to take care of some final business before break:

1. Give me your letter for your buddy TODAY!
2. If you need more images for your media final, get them today and save them on a flashdrive and in dropbox (media.teacher@gmail.com, nhs002, EDU_Mann folder, then your group's folder).
3. Decide as a team if you want one person editing, or if you need two people editing starting after break. Please tell me who will be editing for each group.
4. Check out Christian's video (congratulations Christian on this well-deserved honor!)
5. Please visit the websites above(NIOT and NIOS): read different blogs, look at images, look at video clips, and write a post on each site.

Then in Google Docs, answer the questions below:

1. What articles, videos, photos did you find most interesting or informative and why?
2. What did you post about when you wrote on their websites?
3. What inspires you about these sites and this organization?

Week of December 19, Media Final Exam

Hi everyone,

This week we will be working on our Media Finals.

Please sit in your groups. You need to get the following things done - different people should do different jobs:

1. Type up your combined voice over paragraph in google docs.
2. Then upload it to dropbox and to a flash drive, just in case.
3. Get images about the major topics, issues in your paragraph.
4. Save and upload those images to dropbox and to a flashdrive, just in case

Week of November 18, Creating Media

Hi everyone,

Last week, when I showed you the Youth for Human Rights videos on the UDHR, many of you said you wanted us to make media too. Today we will brainstorm possible ways we could create media about Human Rights. Please visit School Tube (click on link) and look at the videos made at Newcomers High School in the media center.

Watch at least 5 films.

Then in Google docs, please answer the questions below:

1. How do you feel about the videos you saw and why?
2. If you had a chance to make media about human rights, what would you like the topic to be?
3. If you had a chance to make media about human rights, what format would you like to use (newscast, acting in the studio, documentary, voice over still photos, interviews, public service announcements, etc.)?
