Week of January 6, Preparing to see Class Action

Hi everyone,

This week we are going to prepare to watch a film called "Class Action" by Not in our Town.

Please answer the questions below in google docs! This is important because we will be posting your answers to the Not in our Town, Not in our School blogs as well as our own blog.

  1. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?
  2. Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?
  3. What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.
  4. Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.
  5. How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?
  6. Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.
  7. Read the quotes below and write a reaction to each one (make a text to text, text to self or text to world connection with each one):

  • We have had never done anything where we were standing up to something to that magnitude.
  • I probably would have waited for people to have a better chance to get to know me, for me to not have my fist major public events to be ones that were associated with controversy. But, our elected student leadership had said, “It’s time now to make this change. It’s time for this to stop.”
  • We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University
  • This is a happier and healthier place because of our students who provided great leadership.
  • A place so connected with such a history cannot only reconcile with it but change for the better.
  • Somebody comes in the dark of night and breaks out your window, you don’t know what they’re capable of doing. You don’t know what their next step is going to be.
  • An attack on one is an attack on all and it can become trite, though, if you don’t back that up with action.
  • You can’t work with children on a day to day basis like this and see their fear and not be compelled to do something about it.
  • We emphasize the impact of peer power versus peer pressure. You have a power and an impact over other students but if you use it positively you can have a tremendous impact on the community.
  • Allow your mind to be changed and forever understand your power and the impact you have on the lives around you.
When you finish, post your answers to our class blog.

Then, please read 3-4 other students' responses and tell them the following:
  1. What did you learn from their post?
  2. What do you have in common with them, if anything?
  3. What questions do you have?

  2. If my friend is in an empty hallway where there is no teachers and attacked by some other tougher students because of his/her different style of dress. I would do something that can help her like saying those students that its not good to tease someone like this or asking them why are you doing these. We all are different some how from our color and shapes and everything but we are equal as human being. It does not matter how we dress up but we all are equal. I’ll ask them why do you guys dress like this, why not like her or him. I would feel very bad for my friend and also angry because in this country we have the right to dress the way we want why do they make fun of it. If they can make fun of our dress up we can do that too about their dress up.
I never act as in a witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice. But I saw some bullying around me and I was afraid to stand for it. Because there were so many risks and I felt I couldn't help so I shouldn't involve. And also I myself was bullying so many times but I just ignore those.
The word discrimination means to me is like when you feel ashamed and afraid about anything involving about you when someone says something to you in front of people or alone. When someone makes differences while working in a group.
3 examples are like 1. When you are in a train or bus and you hear people saying something about your dress up and looking at you like you killed someone or you are the worst person whom they are watching for the first time in their life.
    2. When you are in School and the teacher gave you an assignment including a group. You are working with your group but you feel alone because the other students are speaking in their language and mostly ignoring you because you speak different language.
3.When you do not like to make up or wear expensive things and people say about you that you are an uneducated person who does not know anything about fashion and the modern world.
Yes I have been bullied many times in my 17 years life style. There is no word to describe my feelings for that moment. I was like nothing and it effects me so much that it takes me some days to think normally like before. When you bullied by peoples you got so many questions by yourself and you start to think all the worse things that happened with you and these makes you feel horrible. That s what i felt horrible.
As a student I think the first thing I would like to do is educating my friends and family to ignore those people. And I also can do posters with my friends and make a message about how bad bullying is and how it can effect some one’s life.
Yes I have some one whom I can talk about my problems. He is my best friend. he helps me with my all problems. For example one day i was going to my home from School and a boy who was following me and teasing me so I did not know what to do though I was new in this country and have no idea about telling a police or whatever. And I was in 7 train and I call him and tell him about that situation so he told me to get out from the train in last moment before the door close and take another train. That s how he helps me in every little thing.

  3. Most of the time I watch the bullying in front of me but do not stand against it because I am afraid I have never did it before.
We as a human rights class trying to make posters to help other students and educated them about discrimination.
Newcomers School is one of the perfect school where everyone respect each other though all students are immigrated in this country and have different cultures and languages.
My native country is full of discrimination. Peoples are afraid to go to school but if everyone gets together and do something gradually it will be better someday. InshAllah.
My uncle and aunt went to my country and after some days some people came to our house and asked to give them the keys and took all the money and jewelry and also threat them to give them the money that left in the bank. If not then they will see them that what they warned them.
If a student get bullied by some one in the same school and if the teachers do not take an action that can happen with other student and like this it can make a big mess in the whole school. So better to cure something now than later when it get worst and out of control.

  4. I would try to find a teacher and tell him what is going on so he could help me and my friend because trying to defend my friend by myself will be worst because I am not stronger. It will be better if I speak out to no matter how afraid am I. After the teacher came and resolve the problem I will feel better because I defend my friend and see she or he fine. Also I will stay with her or him and make her or him feel that he or she is not.
I was 10 when I saw one of my friend being bullying and I was afraid to get harm like her and I remember she ask me for help but those bad girls threaten me to hit me or mess with my stuffs. I was really afraid but the risk I took was screaming but they push me on the floor. At the end a teacher came and we were safe.
For me discrimination means a word about harm, hate and not respect between two or more persons. some examples are discriminate someone by their ethnic, country, religion and culture.
Yes, In my country because I was thin and the way I dress. it feels terrible being discriminate and I felt depress.
I would try to help them like making them feel comfortable and that they are not alone. Also taking a human right class to learn more about their right and feel in a good environment.
well to my teacher or my parents but sometimes to my teacher because they are helpful and have experience. he is my dad who help me to feel proud about my heritage and he try to help me to don't be afraid in front of others.

  5. Before taking human right class I didn't know anything and I was afraid to speak out about how I felt.
well in our human right class me and our friends trying to make the change by doing community service and making poster and explaining to the new students their rights and about bullying.
In our school we all are immigrant but our teacher and counselors help us to build our dreams and to make them true for example to keep study at college and have a better future.
In our class we have done that and some groups where I do community service too. they have been a being change for example people helping in the breast cancer and immigrants also about bullying in school.
I have to say that when I enter the human rights class my mind have been change and all around is different because I care about others and I can help the persons in need.
In my country sometimes young or adult people do that because they dont know what they are doing because they are not educated. also sometimes they want to rob because they are poor.
when someone don't speak out about bullying then bullying will increase.
In this country have been passed through everything but they are trying to maintain a peaceful place.
my cousin is a teacher and she told how hard is to take care of every child because they are different in the way of thinking but she like a teacher explain to her students that they are equal but with different views so they have to respect each others.

  6. 1.I would try to protect him and make that guy leave him alone and make that guy feel bad as well because he doesn’t have the right to judge my friend.
    2. There was a time were two big guys attacked my friend, and i attacked them back as well, because when you actually care about someone you would do anything to protect them, and when i couldn’t control my temper and had to fight back. At the same it was a risk because what if these two guys hurt or attack me in violent way.
    3. It means, That to treat people unfairly , or in a different way, or to have levels for people, such as not every one is equal , isolating ,insulting other.
    4. Well No..
5.Talk to them and tell them to create there own strong character, and speak up if they feel they aren’t being treated well and sometimes fight back even though the bully may be stronger.
6.Yes i have my friends, girlfriend, they try their best to help me and make me feel better, even though sometimes it might be a hard job but they still try.

    7. Quote: We have had never done anything where we were standing up to something to that magnitude. Text to Self: i saw a gay person being attacked, and i just walked away.

Quote:An attack on one is an attack on all and it can become trite, though, if you don’t back that up with action. Text to World: people might be bullying one person and next time another one and they keep on going until large amount of people are bullied.

  7. if i see my friend in an empty hallway being verbally attack by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress,i will tell them, everyone has different style of their dress, this is our freedom, no one could take it away, of course, include your guys.even though you are older them us, we have right to keep our style. i also will remember your adverse, thanks for your care. i think i will feel sad because there are many order students like to bully new students.

i saw a terrible bullying when i was 13 in my country, you know what the boy was bully by a strong boy and all classmates didn’t do anything include to me.i’m so scared, the strong boy picked up the chair and beat on the boy’s back, it happened near to me, i afraid the strong boy will beat people who near to him so i afraid to do anything to attract his attention.

discrimination is people don’t like to talk with people who immigrate to their country.they hate everything about immigration. they think immigrate people is stupid and they don’t have any right in their country.immigration have to listen to them and help them when they in terrible.
Ex 1. there are many students don’t like talk with me in my school.
Ex 2. when we have group work to do a poster, they never help me to do it.
Ex 3. there are some people chat in gym class and teacher always say Chinese !!! be quiet!!!

i will tell my friends and family do not bully others because everyone has right to do anything they want to do, we can’t take their rights away and everyone is equal. i also will tell them to remember to tell their friends what do i tell them and adverse their friends to help each other.

yes, i do. when i have a problem i will tell to my parents, they always help me analysis this problem, and they also will help me to solve this problem without hurt everyone.

    Quite:
when i in china, i saw my classmate was bully by other student but i didn’t do anything to prevent it happened.

when i was young my teacher always tell us do not use violence to solve problem, we have to convince them without fighting.

when i feel sad, my friends and family will comfort me and their comfort make me feel happy. i think it could heel all pain.

there are many stories tell us that everybody together could make a peace and safe community, one person never could do it.

we could watch many movies in the computer, when we look the title of movies we never know what are these movies talking about and we don’t know what will happen in these movies.

when people bully the first person, he will continue to bully more and more people until he realize himself bully many people.

when i teach my brother do his homework, i have to be patient, if i don’t do it, he will think he is a stupid person and he gave up to do his homework.

when a person did a good thing for other without any repay, it could influence other people’s mind. there are many people will follow him to do some good things for people who are in trouble.

everyone have right to do anything they want, but our right have to use in the positive way, only you do some good things survive influence other people mind.

  8. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

Of course, i will stop them first. But if they do not listen to me, i will run to the office find a teacher help me stop the bullying. I feel so sad if my friend is being bullied just because his style of dress is different from others. That is ridiculous. People have the right to dress the way they like.

Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

If i did act, i might will also be bullied by them, and i need lots of courage to do that. But if i do not stop them, i will feel conscience-stricken.

    3. What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.

discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of an individual based on their mambership in a certain group or category.
EX:gender discrimination. Sexual discrimination. Age discrimination . Culture discrimination

    4. Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.
    No...

5How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination
Educate people. especially teenagers. And when we see it , say it. Let everyone know discrimination is happening

6.Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you
Yes, she is my best friend. Whenever i get in trouble, she will always be my strongest suppoter.

  9. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

First, of course I would feel uncomfortable about it, I think these older are so bored and they just do a thing without any sense, what’s more, “my friend” is innocent. And if I meet this situation, I would go to find a teacher to tell to as soon as I can, and call the policemen.

    2. Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

When I witnessed the injustice things, if I act, I may be tied up with the victim that be hurt and do nothing helpful; and if I don’t act, I may feel sorry to this victim forever and never forgive myself because it may cause a tragedy.

    3. What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.

Discrimination means the different treatments to different races, different genders, and different sexual preference.

    4. Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.

No, I have never been bullied.

5.How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

I think I can not some great job about it, but I can help them do some publicity, and tell people around some information about it.

    6. Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

Yes, I have. Every time I have problem, she would listen to me completely and then give me some suggest.

    7. Read the quotes below and write a reaction to each one (make a text to text, text to self or text to worldconnection with each one):
We have had never done anything where we were standing up to something to that magnitude.

Sometimes, we always do not dare to fight against the powers, even though they are very hurt and evil.
I probably would have waited for people to have a better chance to get to know me, for me to not have my fist major public events to be ones that were associated with controversy. But, our elected student leadership had said, “It’s time now to make this change. It’s time for this to stop.”

There is nobody would be happy to be misunderstand or be limited with a permanent judgement.
We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University

I face everything with an attitude that be positive to everything.
This is a happier and healthier place because of our students who provided great leadership.

Leadership is important in any area, government need it, the schools need it.
A place so connected with such a history cannot only reconcile with it but change for the better.

History is a good tool book, we learn from it, and make progress.
Somebody comes in the dark of night and breaks out your window, you don’t know what they’re capable of doing. You don’t know what their next step is going to be.

The most terrible thing is the thing is unknown, and it happens every day.
An attack on one is an attack on all and it can become trite, though, if you don’t back that up with action.

Wicked circle is easier to be continued.
You can’t work with children on a day to day basis like this and see their fear and not be compelled to do something about it.

I hope my sister can be independent, and the first step is show her how to solve problems.
We emphasize the impact of peer power versus peer pressure. You have a power and an impact over other students but if you use it positively you can have a tremendous impact on the community.

To try your best to work in a community can help a lot, and don’t be sorry to your ability.
Allow your mind to be changed and forever understand your power and the impact you have on the lives around you.

With a clear goal and aim at it, and know what you can achieve, if you can do this, you have the better chance to get them.

  10. @yingying: You have sense of righteousness, and I agree with you that violence can not deal with the problems completely. And I have question that is it really true that many people bullied you?! it so surprised me.
@wensi: We have to protect ourselves when we want to help other. and I agree with you that we would feel uncomfortable if we can not stop a sad even happen. And I have no question to you.
@Abbas: I learned form you that we should stand up all together united to and being the knowledge to people and bullies. and I agree with you that sometimes we don;t brave enough to fight against something. I have question: how did you feel about the bullied gay?

  11. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

⇨ Well if I was in this type of situation , I would go over to them tell them to stop it (in a gentle tone ) . If he/her wouldn’t listen and keeps on bothering my friend, I would have to warn that if he/her won’t stop then I will go right away call for a teacher or an adult because this is just ridiculous to make fun and attacking someone because of the way they are dressed .

Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

⇨ I haven’t really experience or witnessed harassment but I have heard form on of my classmates in class that they have seen this happening but couldn't anything because of fear .

What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.

⇨ To me , it is discrimination when for example there is a group of people together and there is one person l=being left out because either physical differences , culture , religion . language .

Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.

⇨ I don’t think i have experienced bullying . But I can imagine how it feels since I have read some few books that had bullying in it and it seems like when you are being bullied you have this feeling like you are all alone , nobody cares or wants to be with you , like your bad and not good enough . It is just a horrible situation to be in .

How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

⇨ Well I guess I could encourage them first , cheer them up not to care about anything the bullier said to he /her because they don’t have the right to judge a person because they are different . And secondly , I will probably tell them to not give up and if this happens again , he/her should not just stay quiet and speak up : tell an adult about what going on and ask for their help to stop it .

Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

⇨ For me when I have a problem that is like bothering me , I would first keep it to myself , think about what to do to solve it . If it’s too much for me to handle , I would go straight to my parents and tell them what is going on . My parents are always there for me whenever I have problems . They are there to support me , help me to solve the issue . And even if I was the one who made the mistake and caused the problem , they will tell me that I should use this a lesson to be learned and obviously they will give me a punishment which I understand .

  12. Read the quotes below and write a reaction to each one (make a text to text, text to self or text to world connection with each one):

We have had never done anything where we were standing up to something to that magnitude.

    - It does happen a lot in this world that when we see something is not right , we don’t want to have anything to do with it since it wouldn’t affect us or it ‘ s not our problems or something could happen to us if we meddle in .

I probably would have waited for people to have a better chance to get to know me, for me to not have my fist major public events to be ones that were associated with controversy. But, our elected student leadership had said, “It’s time now to make this change. It’s time for this to stop.”

    - Change could happen anytime in our life . If we want people to know that there are things that need to be fixed we don’t say oh wait I am not ready . It’s possible that you might not get that chance to change things anymore in the future .

We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University.

    - Me too when I feel that I got hurt by someone’s words or actions telling me I am not this or that , I use it as an encouragement to show and prove to that person that they don’t have the right to talk bad about me if they don’t even know me at all .

This is a happier and healthier place because of our students who provided great leadership.

    - I believe that to get people to live in a happy , peaceful and healthier place , having someone there leading and encouraging them is a really big help .

A place so connected with such a history cannot only reconcile with it but change for the better.

    - This remind me that there were so many countries a long time ago that couldn’t get along with each other and always war war war . But now they put it in the past and decided to work together to have a peaceful world and also for a brighter future.

Somebody comes in the dark of night and breaks out your window, you don’t know what they’re capable of doing. You don’t know what their next step is going to be.

    - First what I will do is that I won’t panic since if I do it will be easier for that person to attack me . I will probably look at what this person is looking for and then think of some method to get out safely and then call for help .

An attack on one is an attack on all and it can become trite, though, if you don’t back that up with action.

    - I guess this could mean two is better then one .

You can’t work with children on a day to day basis like this and see their fear and not be compelled to do something about it.

    - When you know something is not right and you see others suffering because of it you shouldn't just stare and do nothing because it won’t help at all . Do something . Help out because later on those people will be grateful toward you and you will be proud of yourself that you did the right thing .

We emphasize the impact of peer power versus peer pressure. You have a power and an impact over other students but if you use it positively you can have a tremendous impact on the community.

    - Having the power to change the world in a positive way by fighting for what is right is a very powerful thing .

Allow your mind to be changed and forever understand your power and the impact you have on the lives around you.

    - if you have a great leadership , use it for something good rather than on something bad .

  15. 1.I would defend the student because the the student have the liberty to put what ever that he like and others can not critique or hit him only by the clothe. I would feel to bad because those student don’t have respect by themselves and others.I think one of the most important thing is that those people learn that attach a person is a big mistake in this country.
2.A time that I was witnesses an injustice and I act was in a soccer game, a boy cannot play because because he wasn't a good player, so his friend discriminated him and I told them that we are equal and we have the same opportunity to play soccer with our friends and this don’t care if you win or lost. the most important thing is that we have a fun time during the game.
3.The word discriminate means hate others by religion, ethnic, culture, etc. And they also insult people and don’t have respect others people in this world.
    4.No, never.was discriminated by others
5.I as student I can help others students who are struggling with bullying and discrimination learn and teaching them, that discrimination and bullying are two thing that in this world was created to destroyed people but we need destroy thins thing first, and to have peace and love between people in this planet.

  16. 1. What I will do is to try to help my friend out and protect him/her.But I will probably feel terrible for him because he/she has all the right to wear or believe whatever he/she wants.

2.There was a time when I witnessed bullying but I did not act about it. It was back in my country, in my old high school.Specifically,it was during the beginning of the school year. And I saw a lot of new students who did not know anything about the school. So one day, I saw one of them asking to the wrong person. And by that , I meant the kind of person in the school who was really arrogant and brutal. In the first time, he did not care about the new student but the student kept on asking and annoying the other student that he started to heat him and teasing him.Reluctantly, the new student started to call for help.He did not saw me although, but I felt really stupid after he was beaten down. The reason I could not helped him that day was because I did not wanted to have a problem with the other student.

3.To me discrimination means isolating a person from a group. Skin color , religion, Ethnicity background.

  19. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

    - I would stand out and talk to the students who bully that their actions are not appropriate. If they attack the smaller students now, one day they may be attacked by other students who are bigger than them. I felt horrible when this happens around me because I always want to try to make my school a safer and better place for all students to study. School is for us to study, it is not for someone to bully others.

Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

    - I had seen two guys bullied one small students yesterday. I did not act because I thought they were just playing. However, they later almost fought with each other. If I involved, those two guys might target me instead of the one they were targeting.
What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.+

-To me, the word discrimination means people have prejudice on someone before really knowing this person based on the person’s appearance, race or other aspects. One of the examples was people have bias about middle east people, they thought all of them are terrorists. Another example was some people discriminate against immigrants and saying that they are taking jobs so that unemployment rate are high. Also, one hispanic guy was killed in Long Island because of his ethnicity.
Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.

-Yes, when I was in middle school, I was bullied by some students because they though I wouldn’t be angry if they teased me. I felt lost then in school and couldn’t study well.
How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

-- I would show my support to them and let them know that the world is still nice. Being bullied is not their faults, they just need to be brave and stand up to speak out.
Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

-Yes, my best friend who just graduated from high school last year. He is a mature guy and when I had some problems that I can’t go through by myself I usually called him and talk to him. Even though sometimes the problem wasn’t be solved after talking to him, I still felt better.

    - If I see that someone is verbally attacked by some older and tougher students, I would look first if I could stop them. If they are obviously able to harass me, I would go and look for the closest adult/teacher as fast as possible. If that’s still impossible, I would take a picture/video with my phone and report it later(better to do something in the back rather than both of us getting hurt)
Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

    - I never actually witness a bullying or any sort of harassment, but if do, I will definitely act to help the bullied to get out from that situation with anything I could.

How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

    - I could be their friends! I really like to be friends with those people. I think that they are the nicest people that I could be friends with. You won’t get stabbed in the back, you will feel safe telling your stories to them, and many more. I think that it worth a lot to them and give them hope that it will get better at the end. They will still have some people like me! :)
Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

    - No, not really. I usually keep everything by myself. I don’t really keep it inside and think about problems. There are lots of things that are more beautiful and cheerful to think about rather than just thinking about problems over and over. Well, that’s me.

    - I think that this quote relates to the whole world. Most people usually just standing or walk away. They don’t even want to know what’s going on or help. It makes people who cares about those who are bullied feeling really sad. They should have helped and if they all help, there will be no more bullies around the world.
I probably would have waited for people to have a better chance to get to know me, for me to not have my fist major public events to be ones that were associated with controversy. But, our elected student leadership had said, “It’s time now to make this change. It’s time for this to stop.”

    - This quote definitely relates to the world. Many people said that they wanted to end this problem, but it’s really sad to see how much hate are still around us.
We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University

    - Based on what I understand from this quote, I would relate to myself. I really could see from my own experience that people who had this problem before, they would likely to bring more encouragement to the people who are still having this problem.
This is a happier and healthier place because of our students who provided great leadership.

    - I would say this relate to my own life. In our school, Newcomers, we have a great leadership from each of our class. Human rights class is one of the best example. We do lots of stuff to makes the school a happier, healthier, and a better place to go to.
A place so connected with such a history cannot only reconcile with it but change for the better.

    - I read this on some articles on the news, it directly said that Patchogue in long Island would do more and more community activities to make everything better. It’s no doubt that they are aware of what’s going on in their community now.
Somebody comes in the dark of night and breaks out your window, you don’t know what they’re capable of doing. You don’t know what their next step is going to be.

    - I’ve read this in a book when I was in elementary school. It’s frightening and horrible. Just in a second, you could have yourself robbed, kidnapped, or even worse, killed.
An attack on one is an attack on all and it can become trite, though, if you don’t back that up with action.

    - As we all know, Hitler used Jews people as a scapegoat for what happen in Germany. It eventually spread through Europe and bring disaster all over. Poland got invaded by Hitler, and they are helpless without help from all over the world. We have to back up every single good action.
You can’t work with children on a day to day basis like this and see their fear and not be compelled to do something about it.

    - If you see a kid all over the world, especially if their country is at war, you could see the fear in their eyes. It’s definitely makes us wanted to do something about it. We couldn’t just stand next to them and do nothing about it. It’s heartless.
We emphasize the impact of peer power versus peer pressure. You have a power and an impact over other students but if you use it positively you can have a tremendous impact on the community.

    - Definitely this happens in our school. Whatever we do for our community either by ourselves or through community service, it brings them joy, happiness and many other emotion. We have the power to make an impact in the community. We just need to have the willingness to do so.
Allow your mind to be changed and forever understand your power and the impact you have on the lives around you.

    - This is a reflection of myself. I got this on my mind when I moved to this country 2 years ago. I could feel that my mindset is being changed and I become more open minded and accepting the diversity of people. Back in my country (Indonesia), I don’t even know what or how other people live all around the world, but now I know and I really love to have different people around me.

  24. It makes me feel kind of glad that some kids are beginning to really understand that bullying isn’t just something that people can deal with. People kill themselves because of it. I’m glad that we’re beginning to look outside of the rose-colored glasses and seeing that it’s not just kids being kids, but actually a problem. By acting, you’re putting yourself up to be the next target or be labeled as something else. The risks are worth it because if you stand up and show that it’s not okay, even if it virtually does nothing, than you’re enforcing your beliefs, and eventually it may start impacting others to take a stand as well. Many people won’t take action on their own, but if others are than they’re more likely to do the same. In Lakewood, we have a problem with how people treat some of the mentally disabled kids. People like to act “super nice” to them , so that they can manipulate them into doing embarrassing things for a cheap laugh. I’ve always had a huge problem with this, so I do call people out about it and usually I get them to stop… temporarily. It’s more of an ongoing issue. But I’m inspired to keep calling the kids that have the audacity to do this to other people out on their wrong doings.

  25. 1-I will tell to the attacker that he has to stop that, because we all are the same it does not matter what type of dress we use, we have to try everyone with respect. I will feel very sad because I won’t like my school to be a unsafe place.

2-When I was in my gym class, my teacher used to bullied some students, but I stayed quiet because I though that the teacher could fail me the class, and I did not want that.

3-Discrimination is a very sad word for me, I think that we should not be separate of others because their appearances, their feeling, thoughts or believes. Discrimination can be: If I don’t like to eat with some people of other countries because they are not my race or they don’t speak my language, if I saw a person with different cloths than me and I start to make fun of he/she, if I don’t like to talk with a classmate because he has another religion, or if I don’t like to be with people of different color skin than mine.

4- I liked to read a lot, and in my lunch time instead of eat I used to read, and many students told me things that hurt myself, like: you are idiot or you are going to eat that book everyday, but although that I knew that I was enjoying reading and that it won’t affect myself, it just will improve my knowledge.

5-I can give them support telling them that they just have to ignore those who bullied, and I will try to protect them and find professional help.

6-My friend, he is tolerant, he gives me a lot of support although he is not here, he is in my country, but when I told him my problems he finds solutions that make me think less in that, and make me see the positive ways of the problems.

7-•(Many of us just see the problems of the community but don’t help in anything to make a resolution for the problem through the world is passing).

•(Although we don’t know the people of a country, we can help the and give them support as we did with the immigration law of Alabama).

•(If we share the pain it will be less, as many mothers prefer to have the illness that their children have unfortunately).

•(This is what is exactly happening in NHS, we feel safe because they are many students that have voice and speak for others).

•(Dominican Republic and Haiti were enemies, but now Haiti is taken advantage of us, because they come to get jobs and have a better life).

•(If you let others do bad things to you, they will continue doing it and maybe it will get worse).

•( when there is a war between two countries, although the others countries are not in the war, they get affect because maybe they use to have benefits of one of those countries and they won’t have those benefits anymore).

•( we have to speak for others, we can’t see the fear and pain of others and stay as if nothing is happening, I read a book called A child called “it” in which the mother of the main character beat him and his father disagree with it, but he doesn’t do anything).

•(It doesn’t matter how big or small is what we do to help a society in a problem, we don’t have to have a lot of power just the interest of helping, in that way we will help the whole community).

•(The main character or The Giver, Jonas, he let the knowledge of the Giver to enter to him and he changed the life of his society).

  30. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?
I would try to stop them, if it’s not in control or worse than before, I would go to get help from the teacher from school. At that time, I would feel sad because my friend was bullied by someone; also I felt shame because my school was so terrible to have these things happened.
Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?
At my middle school time, there was a girl that was so beauty, then some of students laughed her and made jokes with her. I just sat in the class and just watched it. Maybe I was fear, and then I didn’t help her.

Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.
As what I just said, I was friendly to others, I never have trouble with them, because I know, if we ignore them, they will feel bored, and then they won’t make fun to you.
It’s time for this to stop.” There is nobody would be happy to be misunderstand or be limited with a permanent judgment. We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University I face everything with an attitude that be positive to everything. 31. 1.Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

I would feel bad and angry because is my friend and i would do anything to stop that and protect my friend, i would tell them to stop because it’s not fair, everyone has their own style and personality.

2.Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

When i was in my school in my country, i saw a boy who was new in my school, he was from another city of my country and some guys were bothering him because of the way he speaks and where he came from, so i was passing by when it happened they were making fun of him, i stop them by telling them what they deserved, after that I called the coordinator of discipline and he talked to them and everything was good at the end. Then I helped the boy by taking him to their classroom and he was thankful with me and now he’s one of my best friends.

3.What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.

Discrimination means that people do not accept someone because of the way they look, they speak, they act or their cultures, their countries. One example is when someone of another country came to a new school and they discriminate them because of their skin color or their language or the appearance, another example is when someone does not speak English perfect and they want to make fun of that.

4.Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.

No I haven’t ever been bullied.

5.How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

I would do posters representing no hate, no discrimination, I would do advises of how can people fight against discrimination or bullying or telling them that they have people they can talk about problems they have.

6.Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

When I have a problem I always talk with my mom, she’s wise and she always gives me the best solutions for my problems because she already knows about life, she always tells me the right things to do and i always follow what she says to me.

  32. 1.According to the situation of question number 1, I will obviously help the boy who is targeted. I will go the the other students and ask what is wrong with it if he dresses up differently than others. I will support the boy and I will make him not to be afraid and I will tell them about human rights and resolution of respect. For the boy I will really feel bad but for helping him, I will feel GREAT! I will fell bad for the boy because everyone has the right to be in the they want. No has has the right to make fun of it and I will feel great for helping him because by supporting him he will not feel outsider and he will be able to strong enough to face problems like this in future. And I also by having a conversation with them I am letting them know about human rights and the resolution of respect. So probably they will understand some day that teasing, making fun of someone, being discriminate is not good and is not a good way to behave with someone different. :)
2.It was recent, in November. Me, my sister and my father went to a birthday party of my cousin who is 5years old. There was lots of people whom I don’ t know. Me and my sister was with other kids and some teens. There was a girl who was fat and there was a boy who was teasing her by calling her fat and some other stuffs. At first I said to the boy gently not to tease her like that but he did not listen to me and started to make fun of me by saying she is the voice of her! Then I got mad and said to the boy how would you feel if some one calls your mom fat(as his mom was fat)? He said I don’t care if some one calls! Then I asked wouldn’t you feel bad for it, even a little bit? He said yes I will..Then I said to the girl did you listen what did he said? She said yes and then I said then why do you care? And to the boy, you will feel bad for your mom then think of your mom, how would she feel? She will feel exactly how she(the girl) is feeling..So please, say sorry to her and don’t tease her. Saying sorry doesn’t make you to feel you’re down! Then the understood and said sorry to the girl. :)
The risks was I didn’t know the boy neither the girl. So the boy could go to his parents and his parents could come to me and say something but I didn’t scare of that. I just did what I thought needed to do and nothing bad happened! =)
3.For me, discrimination means going against someone in a negative way based on their race, skin color, religion. For example-
if someone is Hispanic and you don’t like him/her only because he is Hispanic, that is discrimination against race.
If someone is dark skinned or black, and you don’t like him/her because s/he is not light skinned, that is discrimination against skin color.
If someone is Muslim and you don’t like him/her because of the religion, that is discrimination against religion.
4.Yes, I was bullied and it made me feel like I have no value. I am not important to anyone. No one likes me. No one wants me..!
5.As a student, I can make the students who are struggling with bullying and discrimination feel that they are NOT what other says. They the the one what they thinks and believes them-self are. Also I’ll let them know about the human rights so that they can be strong from mind and not break down for bullying.

  34. 1. Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?
I probably try to defend him, and also I would tell this to the principal because that can’t happen in a school, that needs to take action. I would feel really angry and disappointed because we are all suppose to treat equal everyone and that shows me that there still are racist and discriminative people.
    2. Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?
One time I saw how one of my own friends was verbally attacking to a new student, I felt so angry and I stop my friend, I asked him what was the problem and he said that he was just kidding, if he continued there was a possibility that the people from my friend’s country and the people from the victim’s country would be enemies.
    3. What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.
It means hate, when I see this word I cant stop thinking about hate because that’s what I see in all the cases related to discrimination. We can see discrimination when a group of people don't want to talk, communicate or socialize with a specific person just because his culture. We can see discrimination when someone or many persons attack or bully any random person because they don't like him, and we can see discrimination too when a group of persons get away from another group of persons and become enemies just because of their skin or culture.
    4. Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.
Being honest no, since I came to this country I’ve met good persons who gave me a lot of support.
    5. How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?
We can help them giving them support, talking with them, but more importantly talk with the persons who are bullying and make them understand how they are damaging our society.
    6. Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.
Yes, first of all my friends, they are really special persons who i can trust. We always are together and if we have a problem we can count on each other, they are like my counselors.

  36. 1.Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

I will try to find teachers or securities to stop those older students first. If I do not find someone who can help me, I will try to stop those person and go to get my friend out of that area. After that, I will report this issue to school.

2.Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

I have helped little girl who was kind being bullied. I was standing out to help her. And I felt like the people who were bullying considered me as their enemy.

    3. What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.

It means unfair treatment and sadness to me. It could be no one want to talk to me because of my race or appearance, I was in this kind of situation when I was applying for a licence in DMV(Department of Motor Vehicles). And also, I have seen my friend’s parents dealt car accident with police. They did not speak well, so they got unfair treatment at end.

4.Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.

Yes, I felt alone because no one was helping me. Maybe I was bathroom, my friends did not realize I was being bullied.

5.How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

I think the things we can do is to educate people. Not only educate students, but also the parents and teachers. We can make sure our atmosphere can be peace and full of understanding, in which condition can influence the bullies.

6.Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

I always deal things by myself. But when I meet difficulties, I probably talk with my friends. Even though they are not really helping me hand on hand, they gives me peace because I feel someone is caring about me.

  37. Jessica: 1-Your friend is in an empty hallway (no teachers) being verbally attacked by some older, tougher students because of his different style of dress. What would you do? How would you feel? Why?

If I was in the hallway at the time that the attack happened, I would have told the older tougher student to stop and defend the vulnerable one. I would also explain the the older kid what he did wrong and why and explain to him that nobody including him should be discriminated for no matter such as sex orientation, religion, way of dressing, etc. I would feel really shocked, bad, because nobody deserves to be treated like that, even the ones doing it. If people take their time to explain to the person that is doing this “Hate actions” I’m very secure that he/she will understand and try to stop but if we respond with violence the only thing we will get back is violence.

2-Describe a time when you witnessed harassment, bullying or any other injustice and did or did not act? What risks were involved?

Approximately one month ago in my GYM class students were doing the famous “Fitness test” that the state of New York mandates in every school. A Chinese kid which was over weight was doing the “Trunk lift” test, this student did not understand English so he was having a hard time understanding the rules this test implied. He had a Chinese translator but still he couldn’t understand, when It was time to do the test in front of the whole GYM class which are 100 students if not more, laughed at him because he was positioning himself wrongly. When that happened I just felt really angry at the whole class and I said “That’s not nice, you wouldn’t like to be in his spot”. Thankfully that was the only time I faced any kind of discrimination in our school or out side of it.

3-What does the word discrimination mean to you? Describe 3 examples of it.

Discrimination is when people judge or make a distinction of a person, most of the times having a bad result. Some examples of discrimination are sex orientation people often get discriminated for that, and people won’t be friends with them and call them names like “Lesbo, gay, etc”. Another example of discrimination is religion a lot of people get dicriminated for what they believe in and people that don’t like it don’t talk to them, make them feel like they are from another planet, of even do hate crimes against them. Last but not least people get discriminated for their ethnicity. People that don’t like some kind of culture or race they hate against them and like I said before even commit hate crimes.

4-Have you ever been bullied? If yes, describe how it feels.

No, I never been bullied, and one reason I think that is like that is because I speak up when I see something wrong, and because I don’t let people get over me or try to make me feel bad.

5-How can you, as a student, help those who are struggling with bullying and discrimination?

I can help them by teaching them the importance of speaking up when they are being bullied, and I will also let a teacher know when this kind of events are occurring.

6-Do you have someone you can talk to when you have a problem? Describe this person and how he/she helps you.

No, I don’t have a person in which I can trust 100% when I have a problem I try to solve it myself and not try to involve anybody else in it. But if I had a person in which I could trust that person would be nice, with a big heart, and a good listener and adviser when things get wrong.

  39. 1. If my friend is in an empty hallway where there is no teachers and attacked by some other tougher students because of his/her different style of dress I would do one thing which is first I would listen to them what they are saying. After that I would try to tell them not to talk like that though way, show them the reason , give them so many examples. After that if they didn’t listen to me I will call the security or a teacher to take an action on it. For me I would say I would feel very bad because I’m from different country and I dressed in different way doesn't mean that I’m an alien who is from another space. Doesn't mean that I don’t know the culture of this country. I also know how to speak in English, how to talk with other people. They can’t make fun of me because of I’m from different country.
    2. I have never faced as witness harassment or bullying. But I myself faced bullying so many times. I remember one day I talked and I raised my voice who started to bullied other person it was almost discriminate the people but later on they couldn't talk and they move.

    4. Yes, I did when I was in my working place. It feels really bad I was angry on those guys who was talking about the language I speak.
    5. I would try to help them like making them feel comfortable and that they are not alone. Also taking a human right class to learn more about their right and feel in a good environment. Also, if they need any help we will be with them anytime.
    6. Well yes, I can talk with my parents, friends and my teachers anytime. Actually I have never faced the problems and I know that they can talk with me frankly and understand the situation.

There was a one time that I witnessed harassment, it was back in my country. That situation happened after school and some older students from our school come to me and my friend and they was bulling us. I did not act because my friend tried to fight back and they beat him badly, they beat me too, but we escaped, than we were afraid to tell it to anybody except our peers.

Yes I was, I already explained it in the number 2 question

I could offer them my support and help them overcome them troubles also by sharing my own experience of bulling

  44. We have had never done anything where we were standing up to something to that magnitude.

    - Many people do not stand up for the ones that are bulling, the main and the biggest reason is that they are afraid that they can be bullied.
I probably would have waited for people to have a better chance to get to know me, for me to not have my fist major public events to be ones that were associated with controversy. But, our elected student leadership had said, “It’s time now to make this change. It’s time for this to stop.”

    - when I came to this class (human rights class) I started to something similar, we slowly was trying to make our school better place, and I can honestly say that we succeed
We were trying to bring encouragement to each other that the pain that was coming into our lives personally, would be of benefit to the University

-our school is a great place, it is thanks to us in some point by promoting and educating other students about human rights
