Week of December 23, Tying up loose ends

Hi everyone,

This week we are going to explore the websites of Not in our Town and Not in our School.

Before we do that, we need to take care of some final business before break:
  1. Give me your letter for your buddy TODAY!
  2. If you need more images for your media final, get them today and save them on a flashdrive and in dropbox (media.teacher@gmail.com, nhs002, EDU_Mann folder, then your group's folder).
  3. Decide as a team if you want one person editing, or if you need two people editing starting after break. Please tell me who will be editing for each group.
  4. Check out Christian's video (congratulations Christian on this well-deserved honor!)
  5. Please visit the websites above(NIOT and NIOS): read different blogs, look at images, look at video clips, and write a post on each site.
Then in Google Docs, answer the questions below:
  1. What articles, videos, photos did you find most interesting or informative and why?
  2. What did you post about when you wrote on their websites?
  3. What inspires you about these sites and this organization?

When you are finished, post your answers to our class blog.

Then read 2 other students' responses and write to them.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAVE A WONDERFUL VACATION! SEE YOU IN 2012!!!!

  1. I like the podcast that NIOT has, the Immigrant Stories Project. When I heard the podcast, I learn that there are lots and lots of people who may experienced the same exact feeling as us and the immigrant in the podcast. I like it because I can relate my feelings with it and I found it really nice to hear someone else’ story. In the website, I posted about how my feelings are related to the man in the podcast. I like these kinds of websites. It gives me lots and lots of information which I could really relate to as an immigrant. It inspire me to do much better in this diverse school community. I really wish that other people would read these articles and do something about it, maybe help, donate, or any other thing that will promote human rights.

  7. The video that what i thought were the most interesting was the on in Orange High School in Pepper Pike, Ohio, . They did an excellent job in showing and spreading ideas on how to stop bullying . The thing that inspired me the most was that when they did the flash mob of the different type of bullying in their cafeteria , it really showed in their face expressions that they were really willing to fight against bullying , they wanted to stop it and show there other classmates that they also can and should not be just bystander but stand up and fight for what is right . In my opinion , I think we should also do things like this in our school . Not only by doing posters but show it like the way they did . Examine where bullying really is happening and stop it .

Also in this articles show how make many different thing to teach in different parts of the world. The most thing that like me is they made different stories to teach children from different age.
What did you post about when you wrote on their websites?
I think NOT IN OUR TOWN is one of the best organization in this world because in this organization teach to children that discrimination and hate to other people are bad things that we have in our community. This organization teach good thing showing pictures, videos, and articles where the people can understand what is the good thing what we need to do.

  9. ”Three Stories of courage”.This story is so inspired. It is asking me to think about NOT IN OUR TOWN when i consider my gift giving this year. I think it is a great idea, and i really would like to share the videos in NIOT to my family. And i include doing this as my responsibilities. And i think everyone who stand up to hate and work to create better, safer, and more inclusive places has amazing force, strong and power. We all can do that !

  11. In Not In Our Town, Class Room movement was most interesting because it was a serious of stories of young leaders in their community. Even though they are in different area of this country, the concentration of their work is always about human right. There are many people bring up together to take actions. I posted some words that I think important to support these websites, I think the people who work for human rights extremely need supports , so that they can see that we all human beings are fighting for this and whenever they feel lost, we are always there. What inspires me was not only these websites, but also the organization behind them. I saw a lot of famous organizations support this , such as PBS,CPB,EFCT, etc. This made me felt good because finally the human rights get more care in society.

  13. One video that came with an article I really liked was the one, in Not in your School which said that we are all from different parts of the world but we are still all humans, there’s a big discrimination specially for Hispanics which I really don’t understand. We get the jobs that a regular American wouldn’t take just because is too hard. That is so dumb and pointless. I found this video very informative because it shows all of us humans that we are all different but at the same time all the same. At the end of the day we are all made of bones, muscle, blood, organs, etc.

What most impressed me about the organizations in the NIOS and NIOT is that they are all over the country there’s even a map that shows you where they are located and what things they do to help. Like public speeches, paintings, games and more anyone can join and be part of the great experience.

When I wrote on NIOS and NIOT I posted how inspiring their actions where and nice to make people feel more safe and fight against discrimination.

  16. 1. What articles, videos, photos did you find most interesting or informative and why?
I found two articles that are really interesting and I really liked them.T he first one is “Facing History and Ourselves Lesson Plan: Spread the Peace”, its an awesome article that it’s about an special neighborhood in Massachusetts, on this neighborhood there have been many kills involved with little kids, some girls of a school on this neighborhood have lost many family members and they are decided to change that situation, they made a project called “Spread the Peace” trying to make their neighborhood a better place to live, It’s a really informative article. The other one is called “Immigrant Stories Project” and its about a guy named Antonio who relates us how was his situation when he first came here, what was his problems and how did he surpass them. I felt connected with this article not just because I am an immigrant too but because the different problems I had to face, it is a very informative article.
    2. What did you post about when you wrote on their websites?
When I read “Facing History and Ourselves Lesson Plan: Spread the Peace” I wrote a supportive message, I said that they should still doing this kind of activities because there are a lot of child and neighborhoods who need a lot of support, and when I read “Immigrant Stories Project” I wrote how I felt in the same situation when I came here, and that Antonio’s story is very realistic because almost all the immigrants who came to this country have to face the same problems.
    3. What inspires you about these sites and this organization?
The thing that inspires me about these sites and this organization is how they put a lot of effort to reach their goal, they’ve been doing so many programs and projects on different parts of the country and they never gave up, they still have many programs that would like to use and I’m sure that all that effort will be a big difference in the future.

  20. 1. I like the video about Christian, because I was so excited when I saw the environment that I live in and the people whom I know. And by this video, I was encouraged a lot, as an emigrant who is the same to him, I believe that if we work hard, we can be successful too.

    2. When I read Community Responses to Hate, I wrote: we collect any small energy, so that when they became cohesive, we would gain the fantasy power to stop hate. And when I read Three Stories of Courage, I wrote: the world was broken by us, and the only one who can fix it is us, humans, we are together.

    3. They inspire me that we are not alone to speak up and we are not alone to fight for a more peace world. There are many people with us and help us. Warmness is fulled of the world. I would be more brave to do this.

  22. The videos that Marcelo Lucero is doing the workshop with students are really informative. Because students in school really learn things from the true story, true person. Students will concentrate at Marcelo Lucero, because he was one who really experienced whole event since his brother was killed.
I posted my feeling about this website. And I have encouraged them to continue what they are doing, which is really informative for students and society. I am very happy to see we have this kind of organization exist in America.
I was inspired by their hard-work. I know it is not easy to run this kind of organization in the country. And it also has group in Moscow Russia.
