Week of December 13, reflections...

Hi everyone,

This week we are going to do two things in our blog:

  1. Evaluate our day with the St Luke's buddies.
  2. Look more closely at the issues Jen Nebalsky taught us about yesterday
Please answer the questions below in Google Docs about our visit with St Luke's:

  1. What was the best part of our day together and why?
  2. What do you wish we had more time for and why?
  3. What did you learn about bullying that you hadn't thought about before?
  4. What would you enjoy doing when we visit St Luke's in the spring?
  5. Anything else?
Please post your answers to our class blog.

Attached here are photos of Phanice Ongera, we are raising money to help her to get to college. She is 19 yrs old.

  1. St. Luke questions:

    1. In my opinion, the best part of meeting with the St. Luke buddies was that I could get to know them closer and even face to face. That was one of my desire to meet my buddy face to face after sending back and forth letters.

    2. I wish that we had more time to do more activities together with them and do some performance together. For example, like playing music, and singing together with them.
Talking about human rights issues was also enjoyable.

    3. I just learned from that video that bullying can impact a lot of things to one’s self-esteem. In the long-term, it can cause death. The person might commit suicide and kill themselves. That was one important thing that I learn so that I will try my best to prevent bullying happening in my community.

    4. I would really love to do more performances for them, even with them, it will be more fun. Also, doing some more helpful activities that can teach us will be one of the things that I would like to do, such as bullying, and other human rights issues.

    5. If I have the opportunity it will be fun if I and Chaojie can hang out with our buddy and do more activities together.

    Sanitation in Kibera's questions:

    1. I really feel touched by this situation. It really bothers me because I know that every human has natural rights to live properly. However, this situation shows me that not everyone has equal rights. For example, they don’t even have enough sanitation that we do here. Sanitation is one of the essential things that humans need to live, without a proper sanitation, I believe one’s can not stay healthy. By looking at the environment, I am speechless.

    2. I absolutely am willing to help. If I have the chance to help, I would help, by donating, giving some funds to the neighborhood. Also, one thing I could do is to help by doing fundraising for a girl that has passion to go to college to get education and to be able to change the life of people in that community. If a person has education and knowledge, I believe that she/he can change and educate others that can eliminate the cycle of poverty in the community.

  10. What was the best part of our day together and why?
The best part of the day together was playing games. Particularly, it was the name hunt game which we had to find people who were matched with what was given. We learned a lot not only about each other but also other buddies as well in that game.

I wish we had more time playing more fun activities because it was the best way to know my buddy for me.
What did you learn about bullying that you hadn't thought about before?
I found out that the whole world has been working hard on wiping out the root of bullying in each community and our school also has to take part more in this project. Even if we cannot do it as a whole, we can take individual responsibilities for bullying.
What would you enjoy doing when we visit St Luke's in the spring?
When we visit St Luke’s in the spring, I would enjoy having more fun activities and doing something together for our community.

How do you feel about this situation and why?
This situation is really horrible that I question how people in Kibera are living under this every single day. This type of sanitation and lifestyle is below a human’s quality of life. I sympathize with them because I knew exactly how it feels like when I went to some poor, rural areas in Burma where there was only one latrine for the whole village.

Are you willing to help? If yes, when where and how will you do it? Commit!
Yes, definitely. I am willing to help them out by donating some money to build wells, water sources and by writing petitions to the government of Kenya to do some actions for this.

  11. What was the best part of our day together and why?
One of our best part of our day was when it was official class then we show them the school and how it work and how each floor have their own subject. We talk and i ask question if her school work the same way as mine or if it’s different. She was surprised by seeing the Newcomers Gym because hers is smaller.

What do you wish we had more time for and why?
I wish i had more time to talk to her like talk about what we wrote in our letters to each other. And i wish they could have stay longer so that we could play more games and do more activities together.

What did you learn about bullying that you hadn't thought about before?
That there was group of teens that would go to middle schools or kindergarten to teach little ones how to control bullying or stop it. I think that was great, amazing. Because the youngest one are the next generation so starting with them will a great beginning for a better future.

What would you enjoy doing when we visit St Luke's in the spring?
Hummm.. I would like to visit their school and also do more activities and create posters about Human rights. And we should have a party which would be pretty fun. Because i think we visiting them will be the last time we see them. We should make that moment memorable.

    Anything else?
    No. That’s it

How do you feel about this situation and why?
I feel bad and good. Good because the students are giving back to the community by cleaning the street or bathroom. But if those students are willing to do that every day. I think that the community should help also. Citizens should stop throwing garbage in the street and try to keep it clean. Bad because the students should get knowledge not passing their day cleaning only. They could do the cleaning part as community service like we do here in NYC.
Are you willing to help? If yes, when where and how will you do it? Commit!
Yes, why not. I can’t go to Kibera, I’m a student and i don’t work. So i would donate money, clothes (good) and other material that i think is necessary for a teen or student to have.

  23. How do you feel about this situation and why?
I felt disappointed to see the bad conditions in which they are living in specially for the children because they are the next generation and instead of going to school they are more devoted to earn bread for their life. The sanitation is a very big problem and it has also became a matter of security at night. I can’t wait to see a better life for them and we all together have to make the change.

Are you willing to help? If yes, when where and how will you do it? Commit!
I am very willing to help by raising concern among others about these severe issues and also raising money for phanice to help her continue college.

They don’t even have enough sanitation that we do here. Sanitation is one of the essential things that humans need to live. I believe one’s can not stay healthy without a good sanitation. The environment is really scary because people can’t go bathroom at night. They can get attacked anytime at night. It makes me speechless.

If a person has education and knowledge, I think that that person can change community.

  29. 1. What was the best part of our day together and why?
Ans: The best part of our day together was to meet with each other face to face after sending the letter back and forth and share the things that we couldn’t have chance to write in the letter. We also had a lot of fun by doing different activities which even help us more to know about each other.

    2. What do you wish we had more time for and why?
Ans: I wish that we had more time to do more activities together with them and do some interesting things. For example, like playing music, singing together with them and talking about human rights issues was also enjoyable.

    3. What did you learn about bullying that you hadn't thought about before?
Ans: I just learned from that video that bullying can impact a lot of things to one’s self-esteem. Not only in their self, it also can effect on their response to their society and their education. They can even have very low self esteem by which the person might commit suicide and kill themselves. That person have no longer confident on themselves and they also isolate themselves from the society. That is why I take a decision that If I see someone get bullying, I will protect them as much as I can.

    4. What would you enjoy doing when we visit St Luke's in the spring?

    Sanitation in Kibera's questions:

    1. How do you feel about this situation and why?
Ans: I really feel frustrated by this situation. It really make me sad because I know that every human has natural rights to live properly where they are living in a society with almost no natural rights. They don’t even have enough sanitation that we do here. Most of the people were uneducated and the children had to walk miles to miles to get 2 bucket of water every single day. For me, the water was the biggest problem because without water we can’t able to survive.

    2. Are you willing to help? If yes, when where and how will you do it? Commit!
Ans: I absolutely am willing to help. If I have the chance to help, I would help them by donating for them and spread the idea toward the people so that we can work together and help them out. Also, one thing I could do is to help by doing fundraising for a girl that has passion to go to college to get education and to be able to change the life of people in that community.

As we saw in the video, there is still lot of discrimination out
there and that acting together is a solution for those problems.

How do you feel about this situation and why?
I feel really impressed by the situation in which so people have to live in. In this case these people are not even "free" to use the bathroom at night, first because they don't have one at home and second because the bathrooms available are far and dangerous to get to.

Are you willing to help? If yes, when where and how will you do it? Commit!
From this far there is not much we can do, but on e way I could help is by donating money.
