Hi everyone and welcome to our new semester!

Today we are going to think about the Anti-Defamation League's No Place for Hate Campaign.

  2. At the bottom of that page is a link to a resource guide for the campaign. Please click on that link or click here.
  3. Read through the guide and the suggested activities. Think about our class and what you think would be realistic and appropriate for our class to do this semester.
  4. In Google Docs, please answer the questions below:
  • What does No Place for Hate mean to you?
  • In what ways are you helping our school be a No Place for Hate school?
  • What activities did you see in the resource guide that you think we should do as a class?
Now post your answers to our class blog.

Then read your classmates responses and write back to them, telling them:

  1. What do you think about their answer to what No Place for Hate means to them?
  2. What do you think about their ideas for our class?

  1. What does No Place for Hate mean to you?

No place for hate means that there is nowhere in the world that is filled with hatred. In this case, hate doesn’t exist in that one particular place. Therefore, no person is allowed to hate each other.

In what ways are you helping our school be a No Place for Hate school?

I privately promoted my school to be a No Place for Hate school by putting posters up on the hallways, saying that we are all equal with many diversities. Also, I am helping the school by emphasizing that everyone has a right to be hate free.

What activities did you see in the resource guide that you think we should do as a class?

In my opinion, the listening journal activity would be a good idea to do it in our class. By doing that, we can get ideas from our peers on how to have a school that is hate free. We will record the examples of hates that our peers have received. However, we will also record the resolutions based on their opinions.

No Place for Hate means that we don’t allow hate to be a part of our lives. That includes, for example, taking action to make your community a place where everybody is welcome and where discrimination is nonexistent.

In what ways are you helping our school be a No Place for Hate school?

By being part of this class, learning about issues that might affect my community and by taking in campaigns I feel that I am helping my school.

I think “Mix It Up” would be an interesting idea to do in our school because in our cafeteria students usually sit with people from their country. I am curious to know what the students’ reaction would be.

To not allow hate to be part of our lives sounds a little bit surreal because hate is part of being human, in the meanwhile i'm not saying that we should hate or we can't fight it but hate will always be part of our lives, might not from ourselves but from someone else, don't forget people hate for no reason.

The ways that I'm helping my school to be a No Place for Hate are trying to help people to understand that the place where they from doesn't matter because all of us are human and as a humans we have right and we have to respect it. Also I'm trying to be in peace with my partner when they are bother me, i just talk to them and we try to fix the problem in a safe way.

What activities did you see in the resource guide that you think we should do as a class?
Some activities like “rock against racism” we should do in class because every teenager likes to do new and creative thing. Also with this activity they can have fun and learn more about other cultures, so they can have a new idea about them and not just the stereotypes. Another activity that we can do in class is make a big mural in which talk about the human rights and the good part is that all the students can print their ideas in the mural. In that way all the students can see the different point of view of each others.

  24. What does No Place for Hate mean to you?

I personally think No Place for Hate means a place or an environment where everyone respect and don’t discriminate each other either based on racial or cultural differences.

In what ways are you helping our school to be a No Place for Hate school?

Last year, I was a part of an assembly where I worked with one class and taught them on how to stop and stand up if you see bullying in school. Also, in our Student Organization club, we made a lot of posters about giving respect to one another. Afterward, we posted them in our hall of flags for everyone in the school to see.

What activities did you see in the resource guide that you think we should do as a class?

Our school is already a No Place for Hate school. But I think there are still a lot of things we could do to keep it that way. There are a lot of activities in the resource guide that I think will be really interesting. One of them is the ‘ I am unique because..’ In the guide it says to make poster and have them posted in our classroom. But I was thinking that it would probably be more interesting if we make a video interviewing a lot of students in the school the reason why they think they are unique and edit it all together. Another activity that I found interesting was the field trip. It would be really nice if as a class we go visit places or landmarks that are related to struggles for humans and civil rights.

To me No Place for Hate means, there would be no one discriminated, racist, bullied or do any disrespectful works. Everyone treat each other respectfully and equally without leaving any place for impoliteness.
Making posters, presentation, acknowledge students about basic human rights if they misbehave and give them advice about being respectful. I also think, being a part of this class I am helping my school by what I am learning.
I think. making an Orientation activity would great because we see many problems between new students in our school. So if school create an orientation program before the class start and give speech about human rights and ensure new arrivals comfortable.

In my opinion, No Place for Hate means all people work together and create a harmonious, warm, respectful environment. There will be no hatred, discrimination, stereotyping.

In what ways are you helping our school be a No Place for Hate school?
First of all, I think everyone here is helping our school to become a No Place for Hate school because we are in this human rights class. Especially in a diverse school like ours. I make friends with students from all countries. When I was in Mrs.Decatrel’s class last semester. We did a project to help fellow students recognize the diversity of our school. We teach them to act and speak more carefully because we might hurt others somehow even though we might not mean it.

What activities did you see in the resource guide that you think we should do as a class?
As a class, I think we can do the project on topic “Stereotype”. I believe we all stereotype others in some cases even though we might not notice. I think it’s very important to find out what are truth and what are stereotypes we have. It’s true that we learn stereotypes from our friends, media, movies and so on. It will be helpful if we have discussions on those stereotype so that we can know a specific group better.
