Week of April 30, Creating Workshop for Teachers about Bullying

Hi everyone,

Our principal, Orlando Sarmiento, would like our class to create a workshop for teachers about Bullying, which will include a screening of the film Bully.

Today I would like you to work with two other students (on one computer) and help plan for the workshop.

You and your team should do the following (written in your google drive):

  1. Create an icebreaker to use with the teachers. An icebreaker is like a game, that will help participants relax and feel welcome. The icebreaker should be about bullying in schools. It should involve movement and discussion questions. Perhaps you can include statistics/information about bullying in this section.
  2. Create 3 questions to ask teachers before showing the film (pre-screening questions).
  3. Create 3 questions teachers should answer while watching the film.
  4. Create 3 questions teachers should answer after watching the film (post-screening).
  5. List any other ideas you have to make this a successful workshop.
When you have completed this, please post your ideas to our blog. Then read the ideas of other teams and give constructive feedback (what you think is useful about their ideas, any suggestions you have (respectful suggestions).

Thanks!!

Ms Mann

    1. We can use the T/F survey as an icebreaker game for our class. For example, when we read a statement (statistics) about a bullying, the students will stand on the true or false side. After that, we can call on some student. They will need to introduce themselves to the classroom, share their opinions on why they believe one statement is true or false.
    2. What is bullying? What can be considered as bullying?
What are some forms of bullying?
What are some consequences of bullying?
    3. If you have witnessed the same thing happen to your friend, what will you do?
Will you respond differently if the same thing happen to someone you do not know?
If someone you know is bullying others, what will you do?
    4. Are there any part of the film you feel that you are connected to?
Who can those students ask for help in the film? Do they?
What can we do to stop bullying?
    5. Ask each student to share one thing they learn today at the end of the workshop.

    1. I totally agree with your group's opinions. Because I think your ideas could help those students a lot and makes them felt welcome. It is a nice game to help them and make them felt warm.

1.Explain to the class that they are going to play a game called “Telephone.” Have the students make a circle around the room. The facilitator marks the beginning of the circle. Explain to them that the facilitator will whisper a message into the student directly to the left of them. Have the student pass the message on by whispering it to the person sitting to the left of them. The student is only allowed to say the message once and the next person must pass on what they heard. This process continues until the message goes around the entire room. Have the last person state the message out loud. What usually happens is that the message changed a little as it traveled around the room, preventing the original message from being delivered to the last person. State that this was an example of the importance of having good communication. Any message is clearer if they speak directly to their parents as opposed to waiting until someone else tells them about the problem.

    2. Questions for teachers before the movie starts:

Do you think bullying is a big problem?
Is bullying one of the biggest problems in our school? If so, how would you react to it?
Have you ever witnessed bullying in your life?

    3. Questions for teachers while watching the movie:
Who is the target of bullying in the movie?
    Who is the bully?
    Who is being the bystander?

    4. Questions for teachers after the movie:
What is your reaction to the movie?
Does your perspective change in any way before and after the movie? How?
After watching the movie, how can bullying be prevented?

    5. Ideas: The icebreaker that we did in our class can also be done. (Where we gather in a circle)

1.We can utilize the True or False based survey as an interesting activity that will lead us to catch our audience attention . We can follow the steps of what the Human right class students did during the NO Place For Hate Campaign last year. For example, we can read out loud some important statistics about facts based upon the matter of bullying, the students can stand on the true or false side. After that, we can call on certain students. They will have for task to introduce themselves to the classroom, and also deeply share their opinions on why they believe one statement to be a fact or opinion.

2.Have you ever been bullied in your life? How did it feel like?
What actions would you personally take to prevent bullying from manifesting?
What are certain types of bullying? explain how each type can impact someone’s life?

3.What do you think that is going to happen to the victim at the end? and why?
Identify the bully and explain what makes you think that she or he is acting so cruel?
What are some actions that are taken to fight bullying in the movie?

4.Are the actions used to fight bullying in the movie accurate enough? Why or Why not?
How would you respond differently from the actions taken in the movie?
How did the movie make you feel? Explain in details

    5. Ideas: I cogitate that it’ll be meaningful to ask each student to share one or more things they learn today at the end of the workshop and how this will affect the actions they’ll take in the future?

1)Our group will create a game looks like Power Point. Moreover, we will use the point 100 to 600 to show the degree of the difficult level. So, we will let those students to choose one part of those points, and they can decide which level they want to ask. Also, we will create those questions about bullying, and how can we fugure out those bully behavior during our daily life. After all the points they did, they will know about the information about bullying and explain the opinions of their answers. In the end, they will feel welcome in our class and our activities.
    2)What is school bullying?
    What do bullies do?
What can teachers do about classroom bullying?

    3)Does age make a difference?
What does it feel like to be bullied?
Are some children more likely to bully than others?

    4)Why don't children tell?
Does bullying cause problems in later years?
What can parents do about school bullying?

    5) We will ask those students’ feeling after playing our game, also we will ask about their opinions, what are they thinking about? what we needs to prove?

  6. As warm up we can play Word with expression!! For example, 1st students will make a circle and the facilitator say a word out loud as He/She want to say to his left side, than next students will pass the same word to the person of left side and other will pass to his left. And once it comes to end of circle, anyone can say any word and continue the game with couple of words.
After the game what actually will happen is, we will see how many way we can reacts and also it will help to pronounce the word perfectly.

    Questions before the movie start:
    1. What is bullying?
    2. Why it is very important to stop bullying nowadays?
    3. Did you ever bullied? How did you feel?
Questions for teacher during the movie:
    What is victim?
    Who is bystander?
What is the consequences of being bullied?
    Questions after watching movie:
1.What do you think about the victims in the movie?
    2. What would you do to stop bullying as school community?
    3. Does the movie change your mind in any way about bully?

Ask students to share their ideas and help school to prevent bullying to make safe school for everyone.

  7. .We can utilize the True or False based survey . For example, we can read out loud some important statistics about facts based upon the matter of bullying, the students can stand on the agree or disagree side. After that, we can call on random students to see if they were paying attention to what that had been done.. They will have for task to introduce themselves to the classroom, and also share their opinions on why they believe one statement to be a fact or opinion.

    Questions before the movie start:
    1. What is bullying?
    2. What are the impacts of bullying in someone’s life?
    2. Why it is very important to stop bullying?

What do you think is going to happen to the victim at the end?
Identify the bully and give a reason why she/he is acting that way.
What are some actions that are taken to fight bullying in the movie?

Questions for teachers after the movie:
What is your reaction to the movie?
Does your way of seeing bullying change in any way before and after the movie?
What can you personally do to stop bullying?

Idea: the icebreaker that we did in class can be done with them or have them have them create a tableau in group about bullying.

  11. To me I think we should do a individual agree/ disagree survey about the bullying as an icebreaker game in the class. And then we all are going to stand up and as we do in class we will have two sides like one side is for agree and another for disagree. then one person is going to read each statement and after reading he/she has to explain a little bit what’s the statement is about. After that the student move in which they believe in.
what does bully means to you ?
What are some kinds of bullying that happens in school?
What are some steps the teachers should do to help prevent bullying ?
    Did you ever experienced bullying?
Have you ever been a bystander?
Why do children afraid to inform to the adults if they are been bullied?
Does bullying cause problems in later years?
What can parents or adults do about school bullying?
After the activity we are going to talk about the statics of the survey and talk more about the play.

1)The best thing to do is the agree and disagree questions and after each one we should tell them the real statistics. They will need to introduce themselves to the classroom, share their opinions on why they agree or disagree.

2)What does bulling mean to you?
Have you seen someone being bullied?
Have you done something about it?

3)Who is the target of bullying in the movie?
    Who is the bully?
    Is there a bystander?

4)What do you feel about this film?
Do you feel identified with one of the characters?
According to this film, what can we do to stop bulling?

We have to be creative, make them interact and participate with activities since we don't want them to get bored.

  14. Create an icebreaker to use with the teachers. An icebreaker is like a game, that will help participants relax and feel welcome. The icebreaker should be about bullying in schools. It should involve movement and discussion questions. Perhaps you can include statistics/information about bullying in this section.
During the workshop on bullying, an icebreaker we can do is a game called telephone. The class will have to stand up and form a line. The person at the beginning of the line will whisper a sentence, only once and the next person will have to say whatever they heard to person next to them . We will go on until the message reaches the person on the other end. This a game testing people’s listening skills.
Create 3 questions to ask teachers before showing the film (pre-screening questions).
What are your expectations for this movie?
Do you know what a bystander is ?
Have you ever stop one of your student from bullying another one ?
Create 3 questions teachers should answer while watching the film.
How do you feel after seeing the different people in the movie?
How do you react to this?
Create 3 questions teachers should answerafter watching the film (post-screening).
What is your reaction on the principal actions in the movie?
How would you prevent bullying from happening in your school?
How would you encourage your student to not be bystander.

  15. 1) I would prefer agree or disagree questions about bullying as an icebreaker game for the class. for example when we read any statement the students have to agree with it or disagree with the statement and give their point of view and explain what he/she thinks about it. after done with that we can call some students and ask them to share their ideas about the statement.

    2) What does bully means to you? How do you prevent bullying? what are some steps that teachers should take to stop bullying?

    3) If you witness someone being bullied will you stand for them? Have you ever been bullied? what makes people to be a bystander ?

    4) What would you do if you were in the place of the teacher shown in the movie? Do you feel like being connected to the movie in any part? How did the movie make you feel?

    5) After done with this activity we are going to share some statics of people being bullied.

  16. 1. We are going to play a little game, in this game the teacher will participate, too. We will read some questions, in one side it will be agree or disagree. It will be about bullying so please it requires quite and attention, do it by your own. At the end of the activity, will be great if someone want to share something that he/she learned and how she/he will react if she/he see a bullying victim.

    2. What will you do if you see someone doing bullying?
What does mean bullying to you?
What are some forms of bullying?

    3. If you have witnessed the same thing happen to your friend, what will you do?
Will you respond differently if the same thing happen to someone you do not know?
What will be your reaction if your children is being victim of bullying?

    4. How people can prevent bullying?
    How can they get help?
What was the part that impacted you?

    5. After the film and the game it should be great if we ask the students who would like to share what the learned and how they react if they see someone bullying others.
