Week of November 4, More on Alabama

Hi everyone,

This week we will hear about how the Alabama Immigration Law is affecting lives for immigrants in Alabama. It's been a few weeks and I want you to see how things are now.

1. Please listen to this podcast about how families are affected:

2. Now watch these two videos about how farmers are affected (the second video is a satire):

For the first video, click on this link.

For the second video, hit play below.

3. In Google Docs, answer these questions:
  • How do you feel about what you heard and watched? Why?
  • In what ways is what you learned surprising?
  • In what ways is what you learned not surprising?
  • How do you think others will be affected by this law as time goes on?
4. Now post your response to our comments section.

5. Then read and respond to two other students' posts.

  1. After I listen to the first podcast, and I watched the two videos provided, I feel ashamed. US should really consider the importance of immigrants, doesn’t matter if they are illegal or not, since at the end, they will help to improve the economy. They are the work force of the plantation in Alabama and everyone knows that. There is no way people other than immigrants would pick the goods and processes it. I’m not surprised by these videos and podcast because I know something bad is going to happen, that’s a no-brainer. Now, Alabama has to do its own job which would really not going to improve the economy. Lack of work force and unwillingness of the Alabama voters to do the lowest payable job in the state will really crash Alabama to the ground, left it with no money at all. Karma would pay at the end, not in the beginning.

  2. Based on what I heard and watched, I felt that Alabama government are ruining themselves by acting this law. Because the agriculture in Alabama has been greatly affected by impact of the law. Many hardworking Hispanic workers moved out to other safe states or return to their country, so that a lot of jobs that has been left and Americans do not want to do those jobs or cannot do so well as Hispanic workers. The Hispanic workers are not afraid of getting dirty and tired. What I learned surprising was that many Alabama people disagree with this law, but how law could be passed with so many disagreement? What I learned not surprising was that many people fight against this law. As time goes on, the domino will occur, many other states would follow Alabama, so that the lives of immigrants would be much harder.

  5. i couldn’t understand why they pass such a law that force immigrants leave ALABAMA. i really feel sorry for them. They come across a different country and do the jobs that the American not willing to do. They are helping the state ,sort of . now they have to turn back to their country or go to another state. The ironic is the state let the prisoner place the immigrants. well , how could they can stand the prisoner but the illegal immigrants who didn’t do anything to harm others. i know the people will complain about this law, when i know the farm owner complain the American can’t do this farm job and want the immigrants back. i am not surprise at all. Just like i said before, this law is not about jobs ,it is about hate. i think with time passes, the price of vegetable will increase, because less skilled people work on farm means the harvest will decrease. it is not a small problem . it will affect the economic system.

  6. How do you feel about what you heard and watched? Why?
I feel really sad and disappointed because there are many families in Alabama which are getting broken just because this new law, there are children who don’t want to leave this country but they have to because of the immigrant status of their parent. There are big problems with the farmers and surely their economy will get worst.

In what ways is what you learned surprising?
Well i got surprised hearing how the American people accept that they don’t really are like to work, they accept that the Hispanic people do a better job than they on farming or hard work. They accept that they need the Hispanic people so much on the farms and that is very difficult to get good help.

In what ways is what you learned not surprising?
I was aware that many families were going to get broken and its very sad because this law is not hurting just to the farmers or immigrants, its also hurting to the children who have illegal parents. Also i knew that their farms were going to get worst and I hope that this could be a lesson for the government in Alabama and that they could change their mind and think that immigrant people is here to help and just to get an opportunity to improve their lives.

How do you think others will be affected by this law as time goes on?
I am sure that the people in Alabama its going to have problems with the food, because as I said the Hispanic people really help a lot in the farms. If the Hispanic people is not there to help I don't think that the Americans are going to work on that. This is the main problem that Alabama’s society is going to face and hopefully if the government think about it they are going to remove this law and are going to give equality for everyone.

  7. after i listened and watched the two videos i feel so bad for the immigrants who had to leave the country and go back to their own country. they have no rights to do this for the poor immigrants, American people were asking for jobs, so now they have the opportunity to work let’s see if they will go under the sun and work like the immigrants did and they were the ones who gave the market the good fruits or vegetables. after the are gone and as I saw in the everything is not good to be eaten in this situation, no immigrants means no good plants, which means American won’t go under the sun and kill themselves like the immigrants did.

  8. When I heard the victims of the podcasts I felt so sad, I felt them feelings as is it was happening to me, or my family members. I know how bad I can feel if I have to be separated of my mother. Something that surprised me, it is that the Alabama Law is committing to many unfair things; this is just a very bad crime to separate the families, those kids that have to state alone will have some psychology problems. But also, everybody knows that Americans really don’t want people from other place in their country, because they think that those are taking their jobs.I felt very worry when I heard that many Latin people are losing their jobs, just because the Alabama Law; that’s unfair for those who work hard and don’t have a good way to survive in their countries. Something that surprised me is that the Americans don’t do that work, they just don’t want to get dirty on a farm and they choose other jobs. To the owners of farms is too bad, because, they don’t have employers. The last video was so funny, I laughed a lot; that is just the true! How can Americans take out those who provided food to them. All the population will be affect with these changes, and Alabama will have many problems. I was not surprised with any of these videos, because we all know how the state needs those immigrants, it doesn’t matter if they are legal or illegal, and they should not do that.

  9. @Yinghang: I completely agree, I believe that they will screw themselves on this issue. They kicked out the immigrants with their law, the immigrants would abandon the plantation. Alabama would produce nothing overall.

@luay: I completely agree with you, legal citizen of Alabama would not risk their own life doing a low payment jobs even though those jobs are the most important jobs that led directly to something we need.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @chris :- I agree with your sentence when you said about the economy, because they are the ones who are working in the farms.

@abbas :- I also agree about your statement about how you feel ashamed about the government, this government should be helping the poor people not kicking them in the face and kick them out of the country.

  11. Yinghag
I agree totally with you because the government in Alabama is ruining themselves, their agriculture is getting worst with the pass of the time and they surely need immigrants to do that kind of work.
    Luay
I also agree with you, its so sad that many families have to go back to their countries just because this law and because they are illegal, they just wanted to have an opportunity in this society but Alabama's government doesn't care about it.

  12. I feel angry but at the same time sad because is really upset to hear that children feel afraid to go to school. Also I feel sad because family suffer about work and the education for their children. this law is really terrible and hard to understand. It is unbelievable that this is happen and is not affecting just immigrants but also Americans. It was surprising to hear a women crying about this law and how is affecting a lot in education. what is not surprising is that Americans need the immigrants for work because without them they are nothing. also that Americans could work like immigrants on the farm and collecting tomatoes. everyone is going to be affected as on video one and two say that the price of vegetable is going to increase and the time of cultivate. also maybe this law will spread to other states and it will be a tragedy.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yinghang, I agree with what you said, Americans won't do the jobs that Hispanics were doing.
Luay, I think that they will never go and do that job, they just believe that they can do other things better; and they accepted the big change in their state, but after a while they will notice how the economic will affect them, and will like to have those immigrants back.

  14. I feel really bad about what I heard and watched because it is totally unfair to separate the fathers
to their families. In my opinion , I think that the U.S is making a stupid mistake and at the same time kill their own business which is farming. But what surprise me the most is that when the legal Americans has finally the opportunities to have jobs, they rejected it. I mean , wasn’t it one of the reason they put that law?The thing that didn’t surprise me was the fact that Americans couldn’t actually do the job. I mean I knew they couldn’t do it but when they reject it, then I was surprised. To my opinion, they are doing doing this law because of the hate of the illegal immigrants having jobs but the legal Americans don’t. And who knows ,. other state will be affected by it too. I mean Alabama will stop farming , which will lead to make the business down.

  15. @ Chris: I agree with you because they did that by their own, and now they are paying the price for it!

  16. After listening to the first podcast, and watching the two videos including the most recent situation of Alabama, I feel ignominy!!! USA should really understand the rigors of immigrants. It doesn’t matter if they are illegal or not as long they are not creating problems among people and personally I think they can help to improve the economy. They are the worker of Alabama and everyone knows that. There is no reason to do this stupid things with them and the most important thing is, on the other hand the other people who are still living in Alabama, they are not having enough food as there is no farmer to produce food. I didn’t get shock or surprise by watching these videos and podcast because at the beginning if they could ask for immigration papers to elementary school students, these are nothing for them!!! Now, this is time for Alabama to wake up! As they brought up this stupid situation by their own, by this time they should know what they have to do to improve their economy scale. This situation of Alabama is impacting bad things to the state as well to the rest of the people rather than having a solution!!

  17. After I hearing and watching the videos I only can say that Alabama is not destroying the Immigrants lives but themselves too. The agriculture in Alabama is ruined because of their mistake law. I feel really good because now Alabama’s people can see the importance of illegal immigrants. For their operation they are making the economy going down. Alabama’s farmer only lost their agriculture but the immigrants lost their shelter. I’m not surprise in anything with these. Because it has to happen and I knew most American people are not that tolerable as Hispanic people with agriculture. The law was made only because of hate , there was and is nothing about jobs. I’m sure that Alabama’s people will have a big problems with food in this case and economic system will decrease. And if the economic system goes down then everyone will effect. And hopefully if the Government change the law then the situation will surely improve. There is time still if the government make a good decision then it will be good for everyone. Other wise there won’t be any peace because I think where there is no EQUALITY there is NO PEACE.

  19. I have thought about this law a lot, I still do not understand it. Alabama leaders think that the economy of Alabama deceased because of the illegal immigrates, but now, you see these videos and news, immigrates are very important to the Alabama, even people can not keep the normal daily life without the labor forces from illegal immigrates. Since the law passed, Alabama lost the balance a lot, not only for immigrates, but also for citizens. Immigrates are important, we all know this is fact and it’s impossible that leaders in Alabama do not realized it. The point that I do not understand is why they passed this law and get small, even no thanks for it, there is no benefit at all for anybody obviously.

  20. @Jiyuan: I really really agree with you Jiyuan, passing this law is just a hard work that can get no benefit but trouble and problems. The same to you, I don’t understand those people who support is at all.
@Mayda:No matter what happened, the children are always innocent. I agree with you this is terrible and hard to understand.

  21. Based on those Videos and Listening podcast, I saw the one of the effections of Alabama. Alabama made the law to carry the stone, which hit itself. The law made the immigrants to go to other place to live. And there are less hard-workers in Alabama. The agriculture of Alabama was affected, because there is no one want to do dirty, tiring work. I feel irony, the people in Alabama said immigrants struggled their jobs. But when immigrants left, there is no one want to do their jobs in the farmland. I am surprising that the people said they didn’t want immigrants before, now they turn to want immigrants to come back to do the farming job. The thing I am not surprising is the economy is going down. As time goes on, Alabama will receive more and more negative influence by this law; and U.S will finally realize the importance of immigrants, because they are doing most hard, tiring job in this country.

In what ways is what you learned surprising?
i got surprised hearing that Hispanic people are take back to their own countries by Alabama government, even though they do some job that American never will to do it they also can’t stay in this country.
In what ways is what you learned not surprising?

i got not surprised hearing that many people fight against about this law.
How do you think others will be affected by this law as time goes on?

As time goes on, i think there are series of countries will follow Alabama and take people who doesn’t have immigration people back to their own countries. And it also will affect the economic system.

  23. After listening to the first podcast and watched the two videos I was felling kind of angry because U.S.A. should understand the importance of immigrant in this country no matter they illegal or not illegal. They are not creating problems. They are helping this country to impove the economic position to go higher and also they are hard worker which the Americans never do that on their plantation. I didn’t surprise but the second video was funny and serious that they told that instead of the Alabama illegal immigrant the who are going to farming the criminals? Now Alabama people will going to understand the importance of illegal immigrants in this country. This is the time for the Government of Alabama to change the law and make a good decision for everybody otherwise we will see the Americans are farming and getting tired on their field say good bye and we are going to clap........ for them and thank them that they are producing our food to eat.....................

  25. after i listened and watched the two videos i feel so terrible. The immigrants must leave this country and go back to their original country. And some of families are separate because of this law. And people should also remember immigrants are also important to US. They are doing the job most of US citizens do not want to do.

  26. When I finish listening to a podcast and I watched those two videos, I feel that it will have a negative affect on the Alabama and U.S economy. If the immigrants will not work, the U.S citizens will not do that kind of work. Now, Alabama has to do its own job which would really not going to improve the economy. The farmers from Alabama have already get to know the affect of that low. The Alabama must understand that they need immigrants, that they need someone to work on the farms, so the economy will not fall even more.

  27. I like the videos, after heard and watched this videos about immigrant form Alabama my feel was sad because it not just how many children are suffering by this law that made Alabama against to immigrants. The immigrant like said in one of the videos, “ immigrant came to this to work and help their family in their country. I was surprise when I watch the third video “ report of Alabama” because in the notice told immigrants work hard and many people don’t want to do the work that a immigrant do as other people than born in this country don’t want to do. The way that I don’t surprise is the law. that they made because this laws is more by hate and discrimination against to Spanish people. This law may affect in the future in job because many immigrants do the hardness job in Alabama for example in farmers, more people that work there are immigrants. According one of the video immigrants do more fast and well the work that they have. All immigrant collaborate to make better this country.

  28. After hearing podcast watched the two videos I feel disappoint to the US government because as we saw from the videos that how people left their jobs. And the America also put all the fault to the immigrant, they blame to the immigrants because the economy goes down. I am not surprise at all. Because this happens everywhere, but at least, I want them understand the immigrants. We cannot still stay and be quire, we have to speak up to get our rights.

  32. I knew form the beginning that this law was going to affect Alabama itself because whenever you do something there always going to be either a good or bad affect from it . What I heard and saw from the videos and podcast were that the illegal immigrants are actually leaving Alabama to leave in different states . Many kids are separated either from their parents because they were deported or the dad had to stay in Alabama to finish the harvest and they are already leaving for a different state . But this law didn’t only affect the families of illegal immigrants but it also affected the residents who are living there specially the farm owners . There were many farmers in the video that said that the work that they have , the Americans just quit a day after working under the sun and being all sweaty all day long . On the other side , the immigrants come everyday , work hard and get the job done faster . But the farmers said themselves that after the law was passed ,many of their immigrants workers left meaning nobody is working at the farm anymore which equals to no crops being sold . The thing that surprised me the most was when they said that in one state they let the free prisoner work in the fields but still they didn’t work as much as the immigrants did . My hope is just for them to take away this law because it not giving them any goods . And just thinking about those kids without one or both of their parents is just heartbreaking to me .

  33. @Aysha : I agree with what you . They really should be thankful for the hard work they are doing for this country rather than chasing them away .
@Christ : You are right they are the work force of the plantation in Alabama .

  34. When i saw the videos i felt really bad because for me is very hard to understand why do people hate immigrants so badly. I understand that for the citizens of U.S is hard to understand that immigrants play a very important roll in the jobs that almost anyone wants to do. I felt very sad when i noticed that those people had to came back to their own country, maybe there will be no dreams or success for them. Immigrants no just came to this country to take away jobs, but to improve this country and contribute with their work . They get payed a misery, and thats the reason why the owners of factories and those stuff prefer a hundred times immigrants than any others.

I agree with you, in both of the videos we noticed the level of discrimination and hate that Alabama has in this moment
